The one time capital of the German state of Hesse, Darmstadt has had a long and illustrious history. In addition to accommodating the Grand Dukes of Hesse in what is now the Sloss Marketplatz, the city was the birthplace of Tsarina, Alexandra Feodorovna Romanov, the last empress of Russia. The city has retained many of its great historic sites and buildings, most notably the ruins of Castle Frankenstein, one time home of the Barons Von Frankenstein and the inspiration for Mary Shelley, who passed through Darmstadt in 1814, to write her most famous work of fiction. Those of a nervous disposition may be pleased to know that Castle Frankenstein is not one of the Darmstadt hotels currently available.
Further city landmarks include the Lander Ludvig, a huge sandstone column and statue which can be climbed from the inside, the Waldspirale, a wonderful modern masterpiece, and the art nouveau buildings, park, and art museum of the Kunstlerkolonie Mathildenhohe, the most beautiful part of town. Just south of the city is the Orangerie, a baroque garden with fountains, popular in the summer for boules, relaxation and recreation. There is a railway museum too, a vivarium with 700 animals, and an Art Nouveau pool, sauna and spa at Jugendstil Bad. On certain days guided tours are available to the nearby European Space Operation Center.
There are different things going on the city depending on the time of year. Heinerfest is the highlight of the summer, a four day inner city festival and the largest in Germany, and in May the annual music festival Schlossgrabenfest comes to town. There is an open air film festival in August around the same time as Just For fun, a street theatre festival at locations throughout the city. Jazz is big in the city too and the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt hosts regular concerts. At any time of the year the nightlife is lively and there is everything from Irish pub karaoke to nightclub lounge and house music.
Those looking for more traditional German drinking and dining environments will not be disappointed. There are many traditional breweries, taverns and bier gardens in the city and restaurants serving local favorites such as Schwein-haxe of Hessen with beer sauce, dumplings and saurkraut. Other than that, the cuisine of the city comes courtesy of India, Japan, and the Mediterranean. Darmstadt hotels will serve their own food and if the hotel is a traditional tavern it will serve a good range of local beers to go with it.
Staying within taverns and other such independent hostelries is a great way to get a real feel for the culture of the city but there are greater comforts to be had too in the larger luxury style hotels, some of which occupy the best architectural statements in the city. Here is where there is a downside to having Frankfurt as a neighbor, on occasions during the big international trade fairs and expos when demand for the best hotels in Darmstadt can outstrip supply. This can push up the prices of the best hotels at these times but there are always suitable, more cost-effective, alternatives
